Chapter Eleven

Payton was dressed, packed, and ready to go by the time Dr. Jacobson knocked on the door and stepped into the room. “I guess there’s no need to ask how you’re feeling this morning.”

“Nope, but just for the chart, I feel great.” She gave him a warning look. “Unless you’re about to tell me I can’t go home today.”

He held up his hands in surrender. “Not me. I’m afraid I’d be the one with a bruised kidney in that fight.”

She gave him a thin smile. “Definitely.”

That was the minute Mara walked into the room and saw Payton and the doctor staring at each other. “You’re not trying to intimidate the nice doctor again, are you?”

Payton shrugged. “No. I think he has an idea how bad bruised kidneys feel.”

He handed Mara a stapled packet of discharge instructions. “I’ll give these to you, otherwise, I’m sure you’ll never get an opportunity to see them.”

“You’ve learned quickly, Dr. Jacobson.” Mara quickly scanned the documents and listened as the doctor gave Payton her orders.

He began removing the bandage on top of her head. “I expect you to go home and take it easy, and by easy, I mean be a couch potato for a few days.” He took a cotton square from the nurse. “The incision looks great. Don’t wash your hair until after the stitches come out.”

He glanced at Mara. “My office already scheduled the follow-up appointment for Tuesday. If that time doesn’t work for you, just give the office a call.”

He turned the rest of the bandage change over to the nurse as he continued. “No driving or strenuous activities until after your follow-up.”

Payton grinned and looked at Mara, who turned bright red. “What do you classify as strenuous?”

Jacobson laughed. “Sex. Sex would be considered strenuous and off limits for you right now.”

“You know how to take all the fun out of going home.”

“I said it was off limits for you, not the colonel.”

Mara stood. “Okay, got it. No further discussion necessary.”

“That’s a new take on the old saying, ‘It’s better to give than receive.’”

Mara couldn’t make eye contact with the doctor or nurse and busied herself with Payton’s suitcase. “Okay, it’s time to go.”

“Hold on. I have one more question.”

Mara braced for the next humiliating moment. “Please don’t.”

“It’s not embarrassing, honey.” She turned to the doctor. “As much as I hate it, I’ll go along with the no sex rule for a few days, but please…for all that’s holy and good…please tell me I can have a cup of coffee.”

He laughed. “Two cups a day, preferably not back to back.”

Kaplan was about to head back to New York when Thomas Cook called him. “I hope you have something worth my time, Cook.”

Cook closed the door to his bedroom so his nosy mother couldn’t hear him. “I do, very worth your time.”

“So, spit it out. I don’t have all day.”

“I want something first.” He was tired of being treated like an errand boy. This time, he was going to get something for his trouble and get out of this pig sty his mother called a home.
